Last week, in my effort to destroy myself reach my 5 months/1000 miles goal, I rode around Druid Hill park at lunch quite a bit, riding up Keswick at the end to grab a bite to eat on the avenue. Riding back to the office was hell on my hands, trying to hold on to a paper bag from dogwood deli and ride at the same time. I could have kept the rack/trunk on the bike, but it is noisy. Or, I could have used my backpack, but it is hot.

So, this weekend I sewed a hip bag. Sure, I could have paid 52 clams for one from Chrome Bags, but I really didn’t want to spend that kind of money when I’m not 100% sure I’ll like the funcitonality of it…

Here’s some pics. I lined it with silver nylon leftover from a previous bag. Inside, I added a simple pocket for a cell phone and a pen. It has a bike roots tag inside, but I couldn’t get that to photograph too well. The back has a sleeve/belt loop for hanging the darn thing on yer belt.

The sewing on this one is a little rough, especially on the webbing. But hey, I have a not so hot sewing machine and it was my first time working with buckles. We’ll call this one the mule, aka prototype #2.

Need a bag? Not in a super rush? Let me know. I’ll even silkscreen something for you for the right price (or for free if it’s the NBBB logo…)

Holy shit, that’s awesome! You could use it as a mini-pannier too, no?

Damn, and I wussed out on my homemade messenger bag in favor of a Timbuk2 from eBay (which had too be returned as a warranty, resulting in a newer bag than I wanted).

We’re starting to get ourselves in better order. We should be able to have a ride soon, hopefully. Or better yet: a picnic at Druid Hill. You gotta come, man.

    Thanks!

Yeah, I’m down for a ride anytime. I got very familiar with Druid Hill last week on my “100-miles-in-5-days-’is-that-a-man-on-a-bike-or-a-dead goat-holding-on-for-dear-life?’-mission.”

I’m still drooling after a Chrome Bags “Dually”…

Crumpler also has some cool bags.

I had a Crumpler shortly, and I didn’t like it. It was really heavy empty, and not waterproof at all. To boot, the strap started the fray the first day I had it:( I returned that sumbitch to REI.

Still, T2 outsources even their “classic messenger” bags now. That’s somehow very disappointing, especially when the damned price keeps going up.

  4. cube says:

good to know. I’ll avoid crumpler! the founders of T2 have apparently gone on to start another company called Rickshaw Bags.

Those look pretty cool. I like the handles a lot.

Man those look nice. Very cool. I wish I could sew.

  7. [...] I said, I was put into motion by two things.  One, a good thing.  Matt’s awesome bike bag.  Two, a bad thing.  I am going to leave out the name of the manufacturer.  But I have a new [...]
